Measures and Scales of Contemporary Cities Lab

MS Lab is a research unit in the department of architecture and urban studies at the Politecnico di Milano. The lab has been and sharing the idea of ‘Metropolitan Approach to Complexity’ and ‘Practice of the Metropolitan Discipline’, emphasizing the process of constructing a new urban and architectural form that shapes the metropolitan territory. The metropolitan approach to complexity is the methodology to practice on the field of action of the metropolitan dimension.

 

The role of the MSLab within the TELLme project courses is to share knowledge on the metropolitan approach, alternative to land-use planning approach, and discuss needs, values and possibilities on projects with academics, civil servants, and local In this framework, the relevance of investing in the public realm and civic robustness is focused on how to orient mapping efforts to get strategic in structuring city growth.

The Lifelong Learning, Social Responsibility and Digital Learning and Collaboration Unit

The Lifelong Learning, Social Responsibility and Digital Learning and Collaboration Unit at Fondazione Politecnico di Milano (FPM) supports innovation processes in education and training and promotes continuous skill development as essential to build a knowledge-based economy enabling critical professional and organizational changes. It covers a range of activities aiming at recognizing and upgrading skills acquired through life, social, and work contexts; developing and promoting e-collaboration and e-learning with innovative processes and methodologies; stimulating and encouraging multidisciplinary approaches attentive to human and social development; and promoting responsible practices of sustainable and equitable development in local and international settings.

Within the TELLme project, FPM main role is to transfer its expertise into the development of the TELLme Training Programme Guideline (O6) and to collaborate in building the framework of the transversal and managerial competences acquired during the training activities (O7). FPM is contributing to the overall theoretical framework of the Metropolitan Architecture Discipline under the epistemological perspective.

MCAS provides for professionals, administration, technicians and future researchers, advanced and transdisciplinary training in Sustainability, aimed at the regeneration of the City and Architecture. Its studies are distinguished by its cultural and reflective framework, and by a pioneering technical offer, which decisively anticipates the pressures enduring sustainability as a discipline.

 

The Seville TELLme Team interweaves three departments at Higher Technical School of Architecture, University of Seville, Spain: Urbanistics and Land Management; History, Theory and Composition in Architecture; Building Structures and Geotechnical Engineering in addition to experts belonging to the Andalusian Historical Heritage Institute, converging all of them at MCAS of the University of Seville. The role at TELLme project consists of taking care of ecological and social issues, in special on cohesion and equity for emerging new metropolitan areas.

Mendoza TELLme Team is an interdisciplinary and interinstitutional group that brings together researchers from different academic units (Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Education) of the National University of Cuyo and also of the Argentine Institute of Arid Zones Research (IADIZA), executing unit of CONICET. The group investigates the transformations of the territories and their affections to rurality from the point of view of the social sciences studying landscapes, heritages and social reproduction.

 

The Mendoza case of study introduces in the TELLme Project the particular expression of the metropolitan territories of dry lands. The irrigated areas -also called rural and urban "oasis"- and the non-irrigated ones are testimonies of the process of decisions made in the construction of the territory by control of access and use of water. The Mendoza case is highly significant to provide specific categories in the understanding and decision making within the framework of metropolitan projects in dry land contexts.

About the role of Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Azcapotzalco in the TELLme project:

In collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano, the UAM was responsible for evaluating the quality of the activities, in each of its phases, within the TELLme project. The principal role in the University is to determine the philosophy, methodology and technique to identify and mapping the Heritage and Landscape Units in the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico, with the aim of establishing an innovative vision of Landscape Planning in the Metropolitan Areas of existing cities. To train specialists in landscape architecture with the vision of metropolitan planning of the public space.

EStà - Economics and Sustainability - is an independent, non-profit research, training and consultancy centre that acts as a bridge between scientific knowledge, policies (public and private) and active citizenship. EStà promotes innovation in environmental, socio-economic and cultural systems to imagine and create a more sustainable and inclusive society.

 

Role of Està in Tell me project 

EStà, in addition to participating in the project meetings, contributed to the realisation of the MESA related to the territory of Milan (presented in Seville), contributed to the realisation of the glossary, in particular concerning the economic terms, offered a facilitation service to the project coordination for the realisation of the Guadalajara meeting and worked in the realisation of the items of its competence and in collaboration with DOBA for Intellectual output n° 8.

CIPPEC is an independent nonprofit organization that works on building better public policies. We promote policies that would make Argentina more developed, more equal, with the same opportunities for all and solid and efficient public institutions. We want a fair, democratic and inclusive society, where everyone has the possibility to grow. 

 

CIPPEC is participating in the TELLme project with the intention of creating a community of urban practitioners working on metropolitan issues. The goal is to strengthen social capital, generate new knowledge and a baseline for a discipline growing in importance. As part of the project CIPPEC is leading the development of the inaugural book, that aims to reduce the gap between theory and practice around metropolitan concerns.

DOBA Faculty of Applied Business and Social Studies is a private business school located in Maribor, Slovenia. Founded in 2003, DOBA Faculty offers undergraduate and graduate programmes in economics, business management, marketing, and lifelong education management. While educational programmes and certifications are constantly expanding, DOBA offers four Bachelor's programmes and four Master's programmes, including the Smart City Management programme and a doctoral school on innovation and sustainable business in the digital society. A 15-year tradition in online learning makes DOBA one of the leading online business schools in Europe.

 

Role in the TELLme project

In the context of its unique position in applied business and management studies, DOBA led the O7 intellectual output of the TELLme project, which provided an innovative transversal competences and management skills framework. The framework identified key competences and skills needed to effectively manage large and complex metropolitan centres and regions. The framework is the basis for the TELLme Training Lab programme, which provides a multidisciplinary perspective on contemporary metropolitan sustainability challenges to a wide range of stakeholders.

DOBA provided further insight into possible solutions for sustainable economic development as well as the use of open data for effective metropolitan management.

About CNR-IREA

The mission of the Institute for Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment is the development, in the fields of optical and microwave remote sensing, diagnostics in situ, of methodologies and technologies for acquisition, processing, fusion and interpretation, of images and data obtained by electromagnetic sensors and the dissemination of information extracted, aimed at monitoring environment and territory . Also, methodologies and technologies are developed for the construction of infrastructures for geospatial data and biomedical applications of electromagnetic fields.

In the TELLme Project CNR-IREA played the role of technology partner bringing its scientific knowledge in the field of information sciences. CNR-IREA, as coordinator of the Intellectual Output 4 - TELLmeHub (O4), was able to develop, interfacing with the other partners, several tools to provide a digital platform for the Metropolitan Discipline. TELLmeHub is a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) aimed at supporting the TELLme Training Labs and presenting the geospatial outcomes of the project in form of interactive maps, it exposes search functionalities to let the retrieval of information on the basis of concepts defined (O2) in the Metropolitan Glossary (MGIP).
